Steeve Gigučre receives the Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health Applied Equine Research Award

October 1, 2009

Guarujá-SP, Brazil - Dr. Steeve Gigučre, a UGA College of Veterinary Medicine professor and the Marguerite Thomas Hodgson Chair in Equine Studies, recently received the Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health Applied Equine Research Award for his research achievements.

The award was presented at the 11th World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA) Congress at the Casa Grande Hotel and Resort in Guarujá in Săo Paulo, Brazil on September 24, 2009. The honor included a cash award and a trophy.

Gigučre's research focuses primarily on the pathogenesis of infectious disease in foals, specifically Rhodococcus equi, as well as antimicrobial therapies and the clinical monitoring of foals with severe infections. Other areas of interest include comparative immunology, cardiology and respiratory disorders.

Gigučre has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles, contributed to 19 book chapters and co-authored a book, "Antimicrobial therapy in veterinary medicine, 4th edition." He has made more than 60 presentations both at scientific meetings and to laypersons. Gigučre has managed nearly $1 million in grant funding in the last nine years, and has served as major professor or on the committees for 12 graduate students.

"Dr. Gigučre is a talented researcher, teacher, and clinician — a genuine triple threat," said Dr. Andrew Parks, department head, large animal medicine, in his nomination letter. "His work on Rhodococcus equi infections has contributed to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of, and immune response to R. equi infections in foals, and has led to improved approaches for diagnosis, treatment and control of infection caused by this devastating pathogen. His publication record clearly demonstrates his abilities as a researcher, a research mentor, and a collaborator."
